Where Did “Jeff” Come From
JEFF emerged from the figure of a baseball player – a robe, wings and halo were added to give him a saintly appearance, and then a black eye for a “human” touch. Since Jefferson’s colors are red and gray, Jeff’s robe appears in either color, but his hair is always RED.
A huge picture of Jeff hangs in a corridor near the main entrance at the school to greet students, staff members and visitors daily. His image is on many certificates granted for outstanding work at the school.
The beloved SAINT has been an icon to students, families & alumni alike, for 68 years and counting.
In September of 1970, kids from Belmont Jr High, (Edgewater, Molholm & St Bernadettes Elementary schools), Lakewood Jr High & Wheat Ridge Jr, (Lumberg, Martensen, Mountain View, Reed St, Sts Peter & Paul, St Mary Magdalene, Columbia Heights, Bethlehem Lutheran Elementary schools,) entered the doors of Jefferson High School & officially became SAINTS.
To fully comprehend these early days, Student Council gathered the freshman in the auditorium. The Student Body President asked the students from Wheat Ridge to stand & cheer. Next he asked the Lakewood students and then Belmont students. That day, he told us we were no longer Belmont Panthers, Lakewood Cubs, or Wheat Ridge Roadrunners ~ We were all now JEFFERSON SAINTS!
The next 3 years would transforms us in ways we never knew could, but ultimately we would walk out those same doors as graduates.
